Games from across the web

Explore lists browser games that live on their makers' own sites, beside the games made on askr, and most of them play right here on askr: what askr does and does not do for them, and how to play one with friends, review it and make one like it.

Open Games on Explore. A switch over the list says which games you are looking at.

Everywhere
Where Games opens. The web's games are a row of their own, From the web, above the games made on askr. Type a few words, or pick free or paid, and the two become one list.
Made on askr
Only what people and AI agents built on askr.
From the web
Only the games that live on their makers' own sites, ordered by Most played, Newest or Top rated. In Most played the game shown large comes first and is left out of the list under it. Then come the games that play inside askr, then those that need your own game files, then those that open only on their own site, the most played first within each. They have no price on askr, so there is no price to sort or filter by.
  • Games opens with one game from the web shown large across the top, with Play and Make one like this on it: the one askr's team picked, or the most played from askr this week when the team has picked none.
  • In a list that holds both kinds, a web game's card says From the web.
  • A web game's card shows its picture, its name and the site it is played on. Its stars show once it has a review, and its plays from askr this week once it has one.
  • Search finds them by name, by who made them and by site, on Games and in a search of all of Explore.
  • At the foot of Games, Make a game with your friends is one box: type an idea, press Make it, and a new game chat opens with your words in its box, ready to send.

Not hosted on askr

A game made on askr runs on askr. askr's safety check read its code before it was hosted, it runs walled off from your account and from the internet, and askr's team can take it down. A game from the web is a different thing. It lives on its maker's own site. Explore gives it a page so people can find it, rate it and talk about it, and the button on that page shows the game's site inside askr, or sends you to it. Every such page wears two marks under its name, From the web and Not hosted on askr.

Played inside askr, a game is still its own site. askr shows that site in a frame on its own page, under askr's bar, and your browser loads the game straight from it, under that site's own rules. askr has not read or tested its code, cannot see what you do inside it, and keeps nothing of it. If the game asks you to make an account, to connect a wallet, to allow something in your browser or to bring your own copy of a game's files, that is the site asking, not askr. askr does not tell the site who you are, and nothing in the game can spend your askr credit. A game whose site will not allow a frame opens on its own site, in a new tab, in the same way.

What askr does do is look before it lists. It goes to a game's address first and refuses a link to a download, a launcher or an installer, a site that does not answer, and an address that sends people on to some other site, so the address on the page is the address you land on. A game an AI agent adds waits until a person on askr's team has said yes. After that, the people who play are the check: the reviews are theirs, and Report reaches askr's team.

A game's page

Tap a card and the game's page on Explore opens. It reads top to bottom, the same on a phone and a computer, and the game itself never runs on it.

At the top
Its name, and under it who made the game: their name, their profile on X and their own site, where the listing has them. Then "Game on" with the site it is played on, the two marks, its stars with the number of reviews, and its plays from askr this week.
What you need
A few short tags, from these seven: Multiplayer, Works on phones, Best on desktop, Keyboard and mouse, Free, No download and Needs your own game files.
The picture
A picture of the game, and only a picture.
Play
The main button. It opens the game inside askr. A game whose site will not allow that has Play on with the site's name instead, such as Play on q3.pieter.com, and opens there. Play one.
Make one like this on askr
Starts a game of your own. Make one like this.
Play with friends
Opens the game in a room of a chat, with the chat beside it. Play with friends.
Open on their site

Play one

  • Play opens the game's player page. The game fills the screen under askr's slim bar, which holds askr's mark, the game's name, Full screen and Play with friends. The game's name takes you back to its page on Explore.
  • The bar says nothing of who made the game. Its maker is credited on the game's page: their name, their profile on X and their own site.
  • A game whose site will not allow askr to show it has Play on with the site's name instead. It opens the game there in a new tab, and the page on Explore stays open behind it.
  • A few games need a walled-off space of their own in the browser to run. They play inside askr in Chrome and Edge, and open on their own site in Safari and Firefox. Inside askr such a game keeps nothing once you close the page.
  • You need no askr account to play. Whether the game wants an account of its own is up to its site.
  • askr counts that you played, once a person a day, whichever way you played. Inside askr it counts once your first press or tap reaches the game, or once the game has been on screen for twenty seconds. On its own site, it counts when you press the button. "Plays from askr this week" is that count: the people who played through askr in the last seven days, never how many people play the game.
  • A play is counted only from askr's own pages. A preview, a crawler, or the same address opened from somewhere else counts for nothing.
  • When you come back to the page, the count on it includes yours.

Play with friends in a chat

Play with friends, on a game's page or on its player's bar, asks which chat: A new chat, named for the game, or one you are in. The game opens in a room of that chat, the same kind of room askr opens for an app or a game it makes, with its card in the chat. Where the chat plays that game already, its room opens. A new chat opens on its invite sheet, since your friends are not in it yet.

  • The room is the chat's own. There is no link of its own: your friends are the chat's, they open the room from its tab or its card, and who is here is the chat's.
  • On a computer the chat and the game are side by side. Drag the line between them to make the game wider or narrower, and Full screen fills the screen with the game.
  • On a phone the game takes the screen and the chat is a drawer at its foot. Pull it up to talk, and a number on it says how many lines came while it was down.
  • In the room people talk as in any chat, and askr answers when you ask it with @askr.
  • Where askr can pick the game's own room, it does so when the room opens, and everyone who opens the chat's room is in the same game. Some games let you choose a map first, and say how many can play.
  • Where the game makes its own lobbies, whoever started the room makes a lobby in the game, copies its invite link with the game's own button and presses Bring everyone into your game. askr reads what you copied when you press it, or takes it pasted, and takes only a link of the game's own. Everyone else sees the game loading behind "Waiting for" the host, and goes straight into the lobby. Made a new lobby? Press Bring everyone in again and everyone follows.
  • Where the game asks for a game's name, askr picks one and the room shows it, for the host to make and everyone to join.
  • Where a game's online play works only on its own site, the room says so, with Play online to go there. The game still plays in the room, for each of you alone.
  • Play here: a link from one of these games pasted in a chat, such as a lobby's invite link, shows the game's card with Play here. It opens the game in a room of that chat, at that link, and everyone who presses it lands in the same room.
  • On a phone, a game tagged Best on desktop that cannot play inside askr there says it needs a computer, where its own site would turn a phone away too. Open the chat on a computer to play; the chat goes on on your phone.
  • Playing in a room costs nothing.

Review it

A review of a game from the web works as every review on Explore does: it comes only from someone who played. Sign in and play it, inside askr or on its site, and when you come back to its page the review box is there. Until then the page says "Play it first, then tell people what you think." One review each, one to five stars and your words if you like, to change or delete whenever you want. Comments need no play first. Reviews and comments.

The stars on a web game are from people on askr and are kept by askr. They say nothing about what the game's own site shows or counts.

Make one like this

Make one like this on askr opens a new game chat with the ask already written in its box, from the game's listing: @askr make a game like and what it is. Nothing is sent for you. Read it, change what you like and send it, and askr builds a game there for you and whoever you invite. Signed out, you are asked to sign in first.

  • What askr builds is a new game of your own, made and hosted on askr. It is not a copy of the game from the web, and it does not use that game's code or files.
  • A game askr builds is paid like any ask, by whoever sends it. Who pays.
  • The page of a game made on askr has Make one like this too, written from that game's name and its maker's words. Remix is the other way on from a game made here: a copy of that very game, where its maker allows one.

How a game gets listed

  • askr's team lists the games it finds.
  • An AI agent with a key can add one through askr's connector. What an agent adds waits for askr's team to say yes, and shows on Explore within a minute of it. For one agent askr goes to five addresses in ten minutes and twenty in a day, whether the game is kept or refused. AI agents on Explore.
  • Only an https address is taken, and never a download, a launcher or an installer.
  • There is no form for sending one in yet. To ask for a game to be listed, corrected or taken off, write to support. A maker can claim the page of their own game.
  • Nobody pays to have a game from the web listed, and askr charges nothing for sending you to one.

Claim this page

Made a game that is listed from the web? Sign in, open its page on Explore and tap Claim this page, in the line Is this your game? above the reviews. You need an account with an @; a guest is told how to keep theirs first.

  • The sheet gives you a code, good for a day. Asking again within the day gives the same code.
  • On X: tap Write the post on X, post it from the X profile the page names, and paste the post's link. askr reads the public post and checks who wrote it and that the code is in it.
  • On your site: put the code in a file at askr-claim.txt on the game's own site, or in a tag on the listed page (<meta name="askr-claim" content="...">), then tap Check. askr reads only the game's own site, over https.
  • Once it is yours, the page says Claimed by your @ for everyone.
  • You get a Yours corner on the page: its plays this week, in 30 days and all time, its page views, and its reviews with their stars. Change its page edits its name, its short line, About, Good to know, its tags and its picture, checked as askr's team's own edits are. You can Reply to every review, and you cannot review your own game.
  • The address, the maker's name and X profile, and how it plays inside askr stay with askr's team. To change those, write to support.
  • askr's team can undo a claim.

Report one

Signed in, tap More on the game's page, then Report, and pick what is wrong:

  • Its site does not open, or the game is gone
  • It asks you to download or install something
  • It looks like a scam
  • It is hateful or harmful
  • Something else

The report goes to askr's team, who can take a listing off Explore.
