Answer length

How much askr writes, from one or two sentences to everything a question can use: the five lengths, where to set them, and what they do to the price.

The five lengths

Shortest
The answer and nothing else, in one or two sentences. The number, the name, the yes or no with its reason in a few words, or the one step to take. For quick facts and quick checks.
Short
The answer first, then a few short bullets. At most four bullets or a few short sentences after it, about 120 words in all. Background and caveats come in only when they change what you should do.
Normal
The usual length for each question. askr as it always was: each answer as long as its question needs, with nothing added to what the model is told. Where everyone starts.
Long
More depth: reasons, examples, steps and the caveats that matter. Short headings or lists where they help, and every paragraph adding something new. For learning something, or making a decision.
Longest
Everything the question can use. Stories, guides and plans in full. The background, the reasoning, worked examples, the other options, the edge cases and a clear conclusion, under headings. A story, an essay, a script or a plan is written all the way through, also when askr Pro hands it to Write and edit. It is long because there is more to say, never because it repeats itself.

Set your default

  1. Open Settings, then AccountTap your picture at the top right, or go straight to Settings, Account.
  2. Find AnswersIt comes right after Appearance.
  3. Slide Answer lengthTap a dot, or drag the round handle. The length's name and what it gives show under it.

Every new chat starts at that length, and so does any chat you have not set on its own. A chat you set on its own keeps its length when you change the default.

Change it for one chat

  1. Tap +On the left of the box.
  2. Tap Choose a modelAnswer length is right under the askr Pro row, above the list of models.
  3. Slide itYour next message is answered at that length, and so is every one after it in this chat. Under the slider a line says it is for this chat and names your default. When the two differ, a link such as Make Long my default makes it your default too.
  • It works under askr Pro and with a model you chose yourself.
  • Set it on the home page before your first message and the chat that message starts keeps it.
  • When a chat is not on Normal, it says so: the askr Pro label in the box reads Pro, Short, a model you chose has the length after its name, and Choose a model on the + sheet reads askr Pro, Balanced, short answers.

Shorter and Longer

When an answer is too long or too short, tap More under it, then Shorter or Longer. Each names the length it goes to. askr answers the same message again at that length, and the chat stays at it for your next messages.

  • They are on the newest answer once nothing is running, like Try again.
  • There is no Shorter at Shortest and no Longer at Longest.
  • The new answer is priced like any other.
  • A follow-up such as "shorter" still works as it always has, for that one answer, and leaves the chat's length as it was.

How you can tell

  • An answer written at any length but Normal has the length's name in a small label at its top, after the model and why.
  • More, Details has an Answer length row on those answers.
  • In a shared chat everyone sees the label, so nobody wonders why an answer is so short.

Your words win

The length is where an answer starts, not a rule. When a message asks for another length or level of detail, that message gets what it asks for, and the next one goes back to the chat's length.

Try typing, at any length

  • In one line: is it safe to freeze cooked rice?
  • Explain how a mortgage works, in full detail
  • Give me the whole recipe, every step

Some things are never cut:

  • Code, formulas and tables come whole, and so does anything you ask to have written out in full. The length applies to the words around them.
  • Safety information is never left out, at any length.
  • Ask for code at Shortest or Short and you get the code first, with a line or two around it. At Long or Longest you also get how it works, how to run it and what to change.
  • The answer never talks about the setting.

With askr Pro

  • askr Pro still picks the model, exactly as before. The length never changes which one.
  • Cheap, Balanced and Performance still decide how strong a model askr Pro picks. The length decides how much it writes. So Cheap at Longest is a cheaper model writing at length, and Performance at Shortest is the strongest model saying it in a sentence or two. At Normal, a skill still keeps its replies short at Cheap and thorough at Performance, as before; any other length replaces that.
  • How carefully a model thinks does not change either: a hard question still gets careful thinking at Shortest, and only the written answer is short. Web search works as it always has.

Where it applies

  • Answers in words and in code, under askr Pro or a model you chose, in your own chats and in shared ones.
  • Skills too, except Summarise and Translate: a summary has its own length to choose, and a translation follows what you gave it.
  • In Write and edit the length shapes a new piece it writes for you, so a story at Longest is written in full. Text you give it to edit or fix keeps its length unless you ask for another.
  • Not pictures, clips, songs or voices, and not askr Community.
  • In a shared chat, each person's own length goes with their @askr, and Try again keeps the length of the message it answers.

What it costs

  • There are no new prices. You pay for what the model writes, so a shorter answer costs less and a longer one more.
  • Each message also sends the chat so far for the model to read, and that part costs the same at any length. In a long chat the saving from a short answer is smaller.
  • Longest can write for longer, up to twenty minutes, so askr sets aside more credit while it writes. The part it did not use comes straight back when it finishes. Why Available can dip.
  • With a model you chose, the estimate before you send follows the length.

Kept in this browser

Your default and each chat's own length are kept in the browser you set them in, not on your account, so another browser or a new phone starts on Normal. The length an answer was written at is kept with the answer, so its label stays.
