askr Mind

What does askr remember between models and chats, where does it go, and how do I control it?

Checked against the code on

askr Mind is the memory every model on askr shares. What you told one model is there for the next: switch from a coder to a writer to an image model and nobody has to be told again who you are or what you are building. It is one short block per chat and per room, and one about you, each under your control.

What it remembers

  • Who is here. The people in the room, by @, and what each is doing.
  • Building. What the chat or the room is making.
  • Decided. The choices made, one line each. A decision changed later replaces its old line instead of sitting beside it.
  • Open. Questions still open. A settled one leaves the list.
  • Made. Every picture, clip and sound made in the chat or the room, with the model that made it and a caption. Written by askr's own code from what was made, never by a model.
  • Preferences. How each person likes things: any "I like", "never", "always" or "I want" a person says, kept with their @.

Each entry is one short plain sentence. After every answer a fast, cheap model reads the lines since it last looked and adds entries or replaces one; it never rewrites the whole memory and never deletes a line, so nothing you saw there disappears on its own. Nothing anyone types is an instruction to it.

Where it goes

The block goes first into every prompt, before the conversation, so it is the first thing every model reads. Every model in a room reads the same block: the one you switch to knows what the one before it knew. While a model is being briefed the chat says Using askr Mind until its first word; in a room the same words stand on the busy line, and before a picture, a clip or a sound is made.

A room's block is titled Room memory, a chat's Chat memory, a project's Project memory, and the one about you About the person. It stays short whatever a room accumulates: at most 12 people, 3 Building lines, 25 Decided, 8 Open, 30 Made and 12 Preferences, about 1,500 tokens in all. Past a cap the newest Made and Who is here lines are kept and the oldest Decided lines are, since a decision made early still holds.

What you can do

  • Pin. Beside Reply on any line in a room, Pin puts that line's words into the memory, under the heading that fits (askr picks it, Decided when unsure). A pinned line is marked as yours and a toast says "Pinned to askr Mind".
  • Edit. In the Memory card (Room settings in a room, Settings, Memory for your account) click an entry, change the words, Enter saves. An edited entry counts as yours. An entry is at most 600 characters.
  • Forget. Forget beside an entry removes it, and askr Mind is told never to add those words again.
  • Forget everything. Clears the whole memory of that chat, room, project or account, after a second press to confirm.
  • Switch it off. Remember this room in Room settings, the creator's switch; Remember me across chats under Settings, Memory. Off, nothing new is remembered and no model is told what is there; what is there stays until you forget it.
  • A temporary chat. The dashed-bubble button in the chat's message box. On, the chat says "askr Mind is not reading or writing this chat": no block goes in, nothing is written, and a picture made there is not noted. Remembered per chat.
  • Mind noted. After an answer a chip under it says what was just remembered, "Mind noted: ..." or "Mind noted 3 things"; tap it to open the memory. It goes when the next line arrives.

The Made list, and Prompt used

Every picture, clip and sound made in a chat or a room is noted under Made the moment it is shown, with the model and the request. Once a picture is on screen a vision model writes one line on what is in it, its style and its mood, and that caption takes the request's place in the entry. A clip or a sound keeps its request as its caption for now.

When you ask the Image, Video or Audio door for something, askr Mind writes the prompt the generator gets from the memory and your request: what the room is building, the look it decided on, the picture you mean by "that one". Under the result a folded row, Prompt used, opens to the exact words the generator received, with a thumbnail of the picture it built on when there was one. A request that stands on its own goes as it is, and so does any request when the writer takes more than twenty seconds.

A made picture starts a clip. Ask the Video door for the picture, moving, and it goes to the model as the start frame, on a model that takes one; ask the Image door for a change to it and the picture goes beside the prompt to a model that takes a picture in. Only the first picture a request refers to is handed over. Make video, Make images.

Recall

The memory is short on purpose, so the rest of the room stays reachable by search. When a thread holds more lines than the prompt carries, the words of your request are searched across every line of the room, and up to five earlier lines that match go to the model as "Earlier in this room, found by search", each with who said it. The search is by word, in any language, and never reads a line that came after the ones in the prompt.

About you, across chats

Beside each chat's and room's memory, askr Mind keeps one list about you across chats: who you are, what you build, how you like things. It learns at most three lines from an answer, never the details of one task, and at most once every five minutes. It goes in front of every chat of yours, before the chat's own block. Settings, Memory shows it, with the switch Remember me across chats, the entries to edit or forget, and Forget everything.

Projects

A project is one memory shared by the rooms and chats you put in it. Make one under Settings, Memory (up to 100), name it, and pick it beside a chat's title or in Room settings. Its memory goes into every prompt of those rooms and chats, after the block about you and before the room's or the chat's own, and what is said in any of them folds into it, at most once every five minutes. Delete a project and its rooms and chats stay, out of it, and its memory is forgotten.

Shared
The project also brings what askr knows about you into its rooms, under "About @you", whether or not you switched that on in the room. The default.
Walled off
The project's memory goes in and nothing about you does.

Team projects

A project can hold a team, so rooms in it know what the other rooms are doing, across people. Under Members on the project's row the owner invites people by @; the invited person sees "@name invited you to <project>" at the top of their Projects card and accepts or declines. What is shared is each room's memory lines, its search hits and the things it made, which reach the other rooms of the project, and the project's memory carries a Rooms heading, one line per room on what it is doing now, each linked to its room. The room's transcript itself is never opened to the others. A room goes into a project by its creator's pick in Room settings, from the projects they own or were let into; a public room never joins one. The owner edits the project's memory and its sharing; members read it, and their rooms take part. Leave a project and your rooms come out of it with you; the owner can remove a member, with the same effect.

Rooms with other people

A room's memory belongs to the room: everyone in it reads the same block, any member can pin, edit and forget, and the creator holds the Remember this room switch. What askr knows about you stays out of a room unless you switch on Bring my memory into this room in Room settings, your own choice for that room only. Once it is in, the room's models read it as "About @you", so anyone in the room can ask them about it; nobody sees the list itself. A public room never takes it: the switch is refused with "Your memory stays out of a public room." askr Collab.

What it costs

Nothing, today. askr Mind's own calls, the fold after each answer, the caption, the prompt writer, are metered like everything else and charged at zero credits while askr is feeless. The block itself is part of the prompt, so it counts as input tokens on the model you run, like anything else in the conversation; the hold before a turn counts it in. None of it holds a turn up: the fold runs after the answer is shown, the caption after the picture, and a prompt writer that fails or runs late is skipped. A failure in askr Mind never fails a turn.

Privacy and deletion

The memory is stored on askr beside the chat or the room it belongs to, and reaches a model's provider only inside a prompt, the way the conversation does. Nobody at askr reads it and nothing in it trains a model. Delete a chat and its memory goes with it; close and delete a room and the room's goes; delete a project and its memory is forgotten; delete your account and all of it goes. A chat's export and a room's Export carry the entries. Privacy, Chat.

If it will not run

askr Mind carries no error codes of its own; its refusals are plain words. The Memory card says "askr Mind is not answering right now. Try again in a moment." when the memory could not be read, and "askr Mind is switched off on this server." when the whole feature is off. An edit of a blank line is refused with "Say what the entry should read.", one over 600 characters with "An entry is at most 600 characters.", and an entry that is gone with "No such entry." A project is "No such project." when it is not yours, and "You have 100 projects already. Delete one first." at the cap. Nothing here charges anything.
